When Spring Festival Meets Valentine’s Day
16 February, 2010 – 9:17 amThis Chinese New Year is exceptionally different because it falls on the same day as Valentine’s Day. As you know, Valentine’s Day is always celebrated on the 14th of February but Chinese New Year is variable because it follows the Chinese lunar calendar.

This year, the first day of Chinese New Year, which is also known as Spring Festival, and the most important day for Chinese around the world, coincidentally fell on 14th February as well. This coincidence has only happened three times in the past 100 years, in 1915, 1934 and 1953. The next one to occur will be in 2048. That’s another 38 years!

While such an occurrence is rare, I don’t think many people like it, especially couples who are not married yet. This is because most of us have to celebrate Spring Festival with our families in our hometown, especially for the all-important reunion dinner. My friend told me that the solution to this is to get married!
In any case, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy & Prosperous Chinese New Year. May the roar of the tiger bring you much happiness throughout the year!
