Pinging & Ponging

14 June, 2008 – 12:17 pm

I joined Ping.sg earlier this year at the recommendation of my friend, Fatty. He told me that Singaporeans are very supportive of his blog posts and they even email him to encourage him to blog. Well, after registering, I did not Ping my posts on Ping.sg as I felt that I was not writing Singapore-centric posts.

Last month, something awful happened to all my self-hosted WordPress powered blogs after I activated a plug-in that I did not know was incompatible with my latest version of WordPress. The incompatibility wiped out my cache in the search engines, broke my post titles and messed up my robots.txt file.

In short, my blogs were dead in the eyes of the major search engines and I had to start building them AGAIN from scratch. I have no problem with that except that I also lost my SERP and my ability to make money from my blogs.

Fatty told me to ping Ping.sg while another friend advised me to ping PetalingStreet.org. Boy, it has been more than a year since I pinged anywhere!

I noticed that posts that are pinged on Ping.sg after 10pm or so will not get me any unique reads. I told Fatty that Singaporeans go to bed too early as you can see there is hardly any activity on Ping.sg after a certain hour. Fatty says that Singaporeans are not asleep, they are out partying! Really, ah??

And then there are people who are so particular about their Pongs that if they come to read your posts and if it’s not up to their expectations, they revoke their Pong. As for me, I really don’t have the time to go around revoking Pongs whether the blog post was written well or not.

What I don’t like about Ping.sg is that it calls up all my old posts and flood the site even though I did not specifically ping them. I know they depend on our blog feed but there are posts that I do not wish to ping, especially posts that I have been compensated to write, even if these relate to my life and written in my own words.

Let’s see, I have actively pinging Ping.sg not even two weeks and I feel like I have already pinged so many posts, because of my numerous blogs. And I have not even finished adding all my blogs to my profile. :D
