My 2009 Chinese New Year Haul
4 February, 2009 – 1:06 pmIt’s just the tenth day today but Chinese New Year is over for me, is over as soon as the clock struck midnight on the first day of Chinese New Year. Everything is as usual for me. I didn’t feel festive at all; not at all.
I just opened all my red packets and calculated my haul this year. It’s a grand total of RM36.40 *deep sigh*. I don’t remember receiving more than RM100 in any Chinese New Year and RM50 total is considered grand already. There was one year when I received less than RM30.
I compared with my friend, who received a few hundred bucks, and he was shocked at my haul. I’m not. He asked me if I was given RM2 angpows. Actually, no. The least is RM5 these days otherwise the givers would be labeled “bad auntie” and “bad uncle”. LOL
I actually only received a total of six red packets and two of them were from my parents. Ironically, I have to give them larger allowances to cover their Chinese New Year expenses. *deeper sigh*
My friend’s lucky in the sense that he doesn’t have to give his parents any allowance, not even ordinarily. His parents, instead, gave him and his siblings a few hundred bucks each.
I told him that he wouldn’t be eligible to receive angpows anymore next year since he is planning to get married at the end of the year but he tells me his parents would STILL give him angpows. Some people are so damn fortunate! GGGrrrrrr

aha…. some people were indeed very fortunate. Im so unlucky as well, i do received ang pow from my parents but i didn’t any from my aunty and uncle. Besides that, i work during CNY. I guess im just too old for ang pow now. Getting less than RM50 for all the ang pow that u received is indeed too little le.

Justin,
I’m actually too old for ang pow as well. If I “ho meang” I would be giving out ang pow already! LOL
