Happy Niu Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai, Selamat Tahun Baru Cina
26 January, 2009 – 5:24 pmIt looks to me that every time I update this blog, it’s one holiday or another, one festival or another. This time, it’s Chinese New Year! The Year of the Earth Ox started badly for me. Well, actually, I fell ill on the last day of the Year of the Rat. It’s nothing major, just fever and body ache, because of the fever. Still, what a bummer! The weather has certainly changed in many parts of the world. Global warming?

My friend asked me how I will be celebrating Chinese New Year. After much thought, I realized that I don’t celebrate it in any particularly special way. It will be like just another day for me. My friend was surprised that I don’t visit friends. I never did all these years. I suppose its upbringing. I know that when we were kids, many of my friends went to other people’s house to collect “hung pao” and when they grow older, they go for the “hung pao” AND food.
We don’t even gamble during Chinese New Year though I have neighbours who have already started playing mahjong way before the first day of Chinese New Year. They are that free and in the mood, huh? Well, perhaps I’ll change things when I have my own family but right now, I’m fine with how things are!
