Gem Of Life Conclusion – Lackluster & Open-Ended

14 February, 2009 – 2:23 pm

So TVB’s mega drama, The Gem of Life, concluded last night. This 82-episode mega long drama produced in conjunction with TVB’s 41st anniversary, concluded without a memorable note, unfortunately.

I know all along that the three sisters will end up where they started from. Relationship wise, Sylvia will end up with Calvin and that’s the only certain relationship among the three sisters. Sylvia is so mean, causing the death of Gilbert and Derek and Calvin isn’t anywhere better, including landing Sunny in hospital. It would have been better if Catherine’s child died instead of Sylvia’s, don’t you think so?

Personally, I dislike Bowie Lam. I’m talking about the actor and not his character. I watched enough TVB dramas to wonder how he could ever be an actor, and an A-lister too. In The Gem of Life, I hate his style, which didn’t change from all his older TVB dramas that I watched previously.

Constance, on the other hand, is on good terms with Terrence but there’s no conclusion if they will stay together at last. Don’t you just hate it that Constance keeps dropping her “happy ring” and causing so much trouble to everyone trying to help her retrieve it? It happened in Tibet, it happened in Hong Kong. Geee… can’t she just keep it at home if she is so careless?

Could a person forgive someone like Terrence who could have helped Derek but did not? Of course, one could argue that even if he helped Derek doesn’t mean that Derek would live but that is another issue altogether. What Terrence didn’t do tells so much about his character, doesn’t it? And here, Constance, supposedly Miss Righteous, has forgiven him.

Jessica’s role, I think, was the most challenging. I also don’t see how people keep saying how beautiful Ada is, because to me, she isn’t. Whether she ends up with Ah Woh is still a big question mark. Could they be together seeing how big a gap is between their standings in society?

Also, Ah Woh may be blind in one eye; ONE eye only, but in that scene, it was as if he couldn’t see AT ALL. Strange, eh?

I like it that Will flies to America to look for Elise. At least, they both liked each other, even though there had been too much misunderstanding.

The ending of Gem of Life could be so much better. It’s kind of a pity that TVB spent so much to come out with a production like this. It sure has its high points but the low ones kept dragging on. I do like many of the Gem of Life sub-themes.

What do you think?

  2. I think The Gem of Life is another example of the low quality of HK scriptwriters these days. Some aspects of the storyline borders on the ridiculous and this in turn brings out some of the worst performances in the actors/actresses.

If this drama is the best TVB can offer, I think it doesn’t take a global financial crisis to bury them 6 ft under.

  3. The conclusion for Gem of Life the producer have leave a lot of open line. For example is Constance & Terrence is back together? Or Constance just wanted to keep her feeling to herself?

In this drama I like Constance & Terrence being together. Both of them make a good couple in the drama. Beside then that this drama have given me the positive side for doing business.

I’m wondering Jonathan Chik the producer for the Gem of Life is planning to produce the 2nd part of this drama cos he have left a lot of opening scene at the end of the drama.

If the producer of this drama is thinking same hopefully Gigi(constance) will be participate too cos Gem of life is Gigi last drama. She have retired for the TVB.
