Flashback: Tommy Page in Komtar

29 May, 2008 – 12:40 pm

A couple of days ago, I was reminded of Tommy Page and what I huge fan I was back then. I even travelled by train to Penang to attend his meet the fans session and after going such a long distance, I only have two photos to show, and memories.

I remember that I went to Penang on a Saturday morning and came back on the same day at night. It was back in 1990 or somewhere around there. My mother was forced to be my chaperon and my sister came along too. She was not as huge a fan as I was but she too became a Tommy Page groupie for a day.

I remember that my sister nearly fell down from the upper floors of Komtar building and kill herself. As you can see in the photo below, we went up to the upper floors and she stood on the ledge of the balcony for a better view. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she fell. *SPLAT!*

Back then, there were not as many “stars” that came to our shores and it was Warner Music which brought Tommy Page in. When I as in Penang, I met the A&R manager of Warner Music and he was the brains behind these acts coming in. He was surprised that two girls travelled so far “just to see Tommy Page.”

I asked him why he did not arrange for Tommy Page to be in Ipoh and he said, next time he will. But Tommy Page never came. However, he also brought in Linear and Paul Lekakis and they came to Ipoh instead. Ohh.. whatever happened to this leng chai, Paul Lekakis? Anyone remembers, “Tattoo it on me, I want more, more, more. Make a mark upon me till I’m yours, yours, yours.” Wikipedia says he is HIV+ worrrrrr!!!

Tommy Page

I remember that we did not have internet at all, and I had to get the lyrics of A Shoulder to Cry On by playing his song on my cassette player that I recorded on the radio and then PAUSE/PLAY/PAUSE/REWIND over and over again just to the get whole song, or as close to the real lyrics as possible. hah.. if you were from my era, I believe that you did the same!

If you were from my generation, you would know that there were companies that sold photos of celebrities and I was a sucker for those photos. I bought so many photos of Tommy Page, New Kids On The Block ad Leslie Cheung. *Sigh* I believe it was only about 50 sen each. LOL The third and fourth photos here were bought from such a company. Yes, I know that these were reproduced from posters, and I also have these in posters but then I wanted them in photos as well, I don’t know why! So I bought. Hehe!

I wonder if anyone still remembers Tommy Page now. I read from the internet that he is now a producer but it looks like he is not a well-known producer, eh? Not that he was that famous in America back then, until he collaborated with New Kids On The Block.

Do YOU still remember Tommy Page?
